Mad Tiger and his brother were orphaned after Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie killed their father, at the time in the Yellow Wind Sage's service. Despite their circumstances, Mad Tiger and his brother were eventually able to use their strength to govern the local Yaoguais. The pair's governance would lead to a newfound peace for the mortals, who gratefully built Crouching Tiger Temple and provided the pair with bountiful tributes. Mad Tiger would be jealous as a result, however, because the villagers only venerated his elder brother as a deity.
When Yellow Wind Sage returned after helping defeat Sun Wukong and took Bodhisattva Lingji's head, Mad Tiger, still furious over their father's demise, urged his brother to oppose Yellow Wind Sage. During the ensuing battle, Mad Tiger was knocked out, and his brother, in exchange for Mad Tiger's life, swore fealty to Yellow Wind Sage and was granted their father's former title. Enraged after learning what had happened while unconscious, Mad Tiger abandoned his brother and took refuge in Sandgate Village's dry well to recover and eventually kill his brother and Yellow Wind Sage.
While practicing his roaring, he attracted the attention of a man whose son had fallen ill thanks to the Samadhi Wind. Mad Tiger posed as his brother and claimed to be a deity and would use his Plaguebane Gourd to heal the son. In exchange for allowing the son use his gourd, Mad Tiger ordered the man to lure in other villagers for him to consume and regain his strength. The son would revitalize, and Mad Tiger gifted his gourd to the family as a gift. As soon as this occurred, the pair's visits to him stopped, and he believed that they had escaped with his gourd.
Mad Tiger would exit his well only to find that the entire village had been slaughtered, and that the son had been beaten to death by the vengeful villagers. Saddened, Mad Tiger took the boy's coffin back to his well alongside the gourd he had previously gifted and would return to his meditation to finally defeat Yellow Wind Sage.
Mad Tiger and his brother were left orphaned after their father was killed while serving the Yellow Wind Sage; the killers were Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie. Despite that start, the two brothers grew strong and took control of the local Yaoguai, using their power to bring a new peace to nearby mortals. Grateful villagers built Crouching Tiger Temple for them and paid tributes, but only the older brother was worshiped as a deity. Mad Tiger resented this, jealous that the people honored his brother and not him.
Yellow Wind Sage later returned after helping defeat Sun Wukong and brought with him the head of Bodhisattva Lingji. Mad Tiger urged his brother to oppose Yellow Wind Sage. During the fight that followed, Mad Tiger was knocked unconscious. To save Mad Tiger’s life, the brother swore fealty to Yellow Wind Sage and in return was given their father’s former title. When Mad Tiger woke up and learned what his brother had done to spare him, he felt betrayed and abandoned his brother.
Mad Tiger hid in the dry well of Sandgate Village to recover and to plan how he would kill both his brother and Yellow Wind Sage. While practicing his roaring in the well, a desperate man came to him because the man’s son had become ill from the Samadhi Wind. Mad Tiger pretended to be his brother and claimed to be a deity who could heal the boy with a Plaguebane Gourd. He agreed to heal the son only if the man would lure other villagers to the well so Mad Tiger could feed on them and regain his strength.
The son was healed and Mad Tiger presented the gourd to the family as a gift. After that, the family stopped coming to the well; Mad Tiger assumed they had run off with his gourd. When he finally left the well, he found the entire village had been slaughtered and the boy he had healed had been beaten to death by vengeful villagers. This discovery deeply saddened him.
Mad Tiger took the boy’s coffin and the gifted gourd back into his well and returned to meditation, determined to recover and to eventually defeat Yellow Wind Sage. The story shows how Mad Tiger’s jealousy and betrayal led him into isolation and immoral acts, ended in a tragic massacre, and renewed his single-minded drive for revenge against Yellow Wind Sage.
